Hello Summer 2011
Where our grapes come from…
Ever wondered where our grapes come from?
Well, they ALL come from New Mexico. The grapes we use for our sweeter wines and our signature Rio Embudo Red and Rio Embudo Red Reserve come from the Embudo valley, from our vineyard and our neighbors, the Tucker’s vinyard.
The rest of our grapes, like the majority of our fellow New Mexico Wineries, come from Deming, New Mexico. Southern New Mexico has a great climate for growing grapes and a longer growing season than we do up north, allowing for the grapes to develop and rippen well.
Here are some photos from the Deming vineyard. Paolo, a native Italian has run the Deming Vineyards for 25 years! The photo of the single vine (below) is a 25 Year old Cabernet Sauvignon- the oldest vines that we source from down south. Older vines = consistancy in ripe fruit and more complexity.
Weather is a major part of the winemaking process and these past months have been a bit complicated both here in Dixon and down south. The Deming Vineyard survived the cold February temperatures, but had bud killing frost about 4 weeks ago. Paolo estimates he lost 35% of the 2011 crop. Chardonnay, Viognier and Nebbiolo got hit the hardest (vines that had early bud break).

Two weeks ago, we got the biggest snow fall all season on may 1! Who knows what that did to the Dixon grapes and apples… yet to be dertermined!
The good news, while the jury is still out on the 2011 grapes, we’re happy to say we’ve had great seasons prior and our 2007 Cabernet is tasting nicely, as is our 2009 Chardonnay and our Vitner’s Reserve! Stop by the winery and visit with the winemakers….
10% off Primavera! A medal winner, our Primavera is a blend of Muscat and Seyval Blanc. Its pleasant floral bouquet is followed by a crisp, fruity taste and a lively finish. Enjoy this wine with poultry and seafood dishes. It’s a great sipper!
